You’re invited to gather with others in the community to experience TEDxChristchurch 2019 and TEDxYouth@Christchurch being streamed in live-action! This year is TEDxChristchurch’s 10th anniversary, and the theme of our event is Tūrangawaewae, meaning, a place to stand or a place of belonging. On 24-25 August, we want TEDxChristchurch and TEDxYouth@Christchurch to be your tūrangawaewae—your place of belonging. Haere mai!

The new CBD library Tūranga is the perfect location to host this year’s live stream. Tūranga is centred on the notion of mātauranga mana whenua – the body of knowledge that originates from the people of this place. Tūranga speaks of whakapapa across generations and is celebrated in a depiction on the west-facing wall of the library building. Internal artworks depict the Ngāi Tahu Tāwhaki narrative of knowledge acquisition.

The design was developed in discussion with Ngāi Tahu and the Ngāi Tūāhuriri rūnanga. Terraces and openings on upper floors face culturally significant points in the Canterbury landscape and beyond:

Kā Tiritiri o te Moana – Southern Alps

Aoraki / Mt Cook

Horomaka / Pātaka o Rākaihautū – Banks Peninsula

Maungatere – Mt Grey

Hawaiki – according to oral traditions, one of the places of origin of New Zealand’s earliest settlers

The TEDx whānau is incredibly pleased to include Tūranga as a part of our extended audience!
